Irish Crane Manufacturer Launches New Self- Erecting Tower Crane

Irish crane manufacturer, Mantis, has announced a new model to the company's range of self-erecting tower cranes. The Mantis 36.10 has a maximum lifting capacity of 4,000 kg.

The Mantis 36.10 is superseding the 35.10 which has been in production now for sometime. The new model has been designed so that the ballast weights from the Mantis 32.10 model can be used, thereby providing a cost saving to owners who may have both models. The new model also shares the same hoisting motors, trolley motors and other components with the 32.10.

A key feature on the 36.10 is the relocating of the trolley motor to the bottom of the tower. This allows for easier maintenance work, such as adjusting the trolley brake, without any need to dismantle the cranes.

From delivery to final position on site, the crane takes a minimal amount of time to unfold, configure and commission. Erecting and dismantling requires little operator intervention as the unfolding and folding is all done by hydraulics.

The new crane can set up with jib configurations of 36 m, 32 m, 28 m and 14 m, giving a maximum hook height with jib luffed of 27 m or 22m with a horizontal jib. The crane can operate in winds up to 72 km/h depending on load dimensions.

The crane is operated using a Radio Remote Control Unit which, apart from operating the crane, also displays the weight on the hook, the trolley distance, hook height, wind speed and more. The remote control unit allows the crane operator to work from the most convenient point at which to monitor the load movement and positioning. As an alternative the crane can be operated using a cable control however few operators will choose this option but it is useful as a backup in the event of the radio remote control unit getting damaged.

The Mantis 36.10 requires a 400V 50 Hz mains electricity supply or alternatively it can be powered by diesel generator, approx 30 Kva – 40 Kva size is adequate as all the motors are frequency controlled.

Designed for easy transportation, just two trucks are required; a low-loader trailer for the folded crane itself and a flat-bed trailer for the ballast. With its own wheeled chassis, once on site, it can be quickly dismantled and moved to a different position using a site vehicle equipped with tow hitch.

For customers requiring it, Mantis can supply an axle kit with brakes, incorporating lights and other features to comply with road regulations. This option allows the crane to be towed behind a truck on its own wheels. This is common in mainland Europe but is seldom used in the UK or Ireland.

Versatile Range

The Mantis 36.10 joins a growing range of self-erecting tower cranes manufactured by Mantis at their facilities in Ireland. Their current range comprises of the 23.09, 30.10, 32.10, 35.10, 36.10 and the innovative TC 25. Apart from manufacturing, the company also has an extensive fleet of self-erecting tower cranes for hire through the UK and Ireland.

Mantis Aims to Increase Awareness

Participating at Intermat for the first time, Mantis is now seeking to develop additional export potential and is seeking dealers and agents to represent the company. Robert Rowlette, General Manager for Mantis explains, “Throughout mainland Europe, self erecting tower cranes are used extensively, however, this is not the case in the UK where telehandlers are the preferred tool for delivering materials around building sites.

Using telehandlers involves secondary material handling, as they are not able to deliver to the point of use. We are trying to educate contractors and builders of the economics that self-erecting tower cranes provide; their ease of use; flexibility and adaptability. We have also designed our own range of self-erecting tower cranes to better meet the specific requirements of the construction industry in the UK, namely the Mantis TC 25 which is a self erecting crane that has its own generator mounted on board and can be transported with its full complement of ballast enabling the crane be erected for work in less than 30 minutes from delivery.

However, we are now looking to expand our unique marketing style to other countries. Although we are initially focusing on Poland, CIS, Czech Republic, Baltic States we are prepared to talk to dealers anywhere. We have already sold cranes directly into mainland Europe, Africa and to the USA.

I believe that now is a good time to start working with dealers who can deliver the close level of customer service that Mantis does. Being small has its advantages. We can react to customer needs quickly and efficiently.”

Mantis Cranes, the only European manufacturer of self-erecting tower cranes outside of continental Europe, has manufacturing facilities in Co. Donegal, Ireland and was established in 1998 primarily to develop market acceptance of self-erecting tower cranes within the UK and Ireland.
