BACKHOE-LOADER MAKES FOR PERFECT DAY When the boss of Links Plant & Equipment, Stephen James married Dale Smaller what better way to start the perfect relationship than with a New Holland B110B backhoe loader, which was used to carry the bride and groom the 2 km from the church in Barrow-Upon Humber to the reception. Steve James said “I'm a digger driver by trade and I started my own plant hire business 15 years ago. I live and breathe construction plant when I'm not running my motor-cross race team. So I thought, why not do something a little different?” To enable the happy couple to drive to their reception, Steve fitted an extra seat into the cab and, of course, added a few wedding decorations. What did his new wife think to the idea? “It's not what the guests where expecting but it was nice to have something different for this special occasion. We share the same interests having known each other for over seven years and we work together everyday. I'm the company secretary and Steve is the Director.” Apart from the New Holland backhoe loader, Steve and Dale had 5 bridesmaids and, putting in an appearance at the reception, was the 6 th bridesmaid, the couple's pet lurcher, Freda, dressed appropriately. Needless to say, New Holland Construction reliability got them safely to the reception. |

CONTRACTOR FLIES IN NEW HOLLAND EXCAVATOR To transfer a 26 t. New Holland E235B excavator from one railway abutment to the other, during reconstruction of the Newton Road railway bridge, Ashford, Kent, the contractor used a 250 t. mobile crane. The contractor, Geoffrey Osborne, using the excavator on hire from OneCall, had just 52 hours to clear existing ballast from the track and then to replace it after a new bridge had been installed. The new bridge was lifted in to position using an 800 t lattice jib crane. The £200,000 project includes construction of realigned carriageway in order to increase headroom clearance and carriageway/footway widths under the structure; removal of 4 bridge decks and south abutment; install new steel/reinforced concrete abutment on piles, position new decks, road widening and resurfacing. The project is funded by the department for Communities and Local Government, Network Rail and Kent County Council as part of making Ashford best placed in Britain. |

| THE UK NEW HOLLAND CONSTRUCTION ‘GRAND PRIX' KICKS OFF After a successful launch at SED of the 2008 New Holland Grand Prix event, operators are preparing themselves for the final heats which take place at Rockingham Castle, Market Harborough on Saturday June 28th. Those that can successfully demonstrate their skills at the precision handling of skid steers, excavators, backhoe-loaders, wheel loaders and large excavators can go through to the European Final later in the year. The UK team will comprise the overall winner and three runners up. SED 2008 gave entrants a preview of what the ultimate test will be. The SED competition required operators to demonstrate their ability to handle a mini-excavator smoothly and with precision. One test involved lowering a pin suspended to the bucket into a vertical, freestanding pipe. The other was picking up blocks in the bucket and stacking them safely. The day at Rockingham Castle will also be an opportunity for operators, supporters and visitors to see some of the latest machines from New Holland being demonstrated, which they can also try for themselves, including an E150 Blade Runner, E18SR, E50 and E385 excavators. For the more adventurous, there will be a skid steer loader assault course. SED 2008 Grand Prix Winners

NEW HOLLAND DIGS DEEP IN LONDON When completed, The Grange St Paul's Hotel. currently under construction in the shadow of St Paul's Cathedral will be London's latest 5-star hotel. Like so many inner London projects, the construction works have not been without their challenges. Damian Horan, Project Engineer for the contractor said that apart from the usual problems of working in a very restricted site, with office building to all four sides, the most difficult challenge has been in scheduling logistics in deliveries to the site, which can only be accessed via a narrow, cul-de-sac. Another problem was minimising equipment in the 2,000 m², which had to be excavated to a depth of 14 m to provide for the three-level basement. One solution was to bring on to site a New Holland E215LC ME hydraulic excavator, a standard excavator which can be easily converted to add a third boom to provide exceptional reach to a depth of over 15 m. |
