NEW HOLLAND SKIDSTEERS PREFERRED CHOICE IN IRISH RECYCLING CENTRES Throughout Ireland, there is a rapidly growing awareness of the importance of recycling. As a result, recycling collection points are springing up all over the place. Leading this drive to better awareness of environmental issues is Enda Kiernan, Senior Executive Engineer responsible for the Recycling Depots of Cork County Council and specialists in waste management, Indaver Ireland Limited. Both organizations are active in the promotion of waste recycling throughout Ireland. Enda Kiernan's philosophy on recycling is to educate children, make it as easy as possible for residents to recycle material and by setting a good example. The recycling centre at Bandon is typical of the approach adopted by Cork County Council, which has 9 civic amenity sites (HWRC's) for a population of 362,000 people. It is easy to access by car and well maintained with the drop-off points for various materials clearly identified. It offers recycling points for 34 different types of waste including such diverse products as paper and cardboard, CD-ROMs, fluorescent tubes, paint cans, electrical items, green waste, glass, batteries and even mobile phones and postage stamps. “We live in a disposal age, where people have got too used to simply throwing away. However, it is amazing just how much can actually be recycled. Currently, Ireland recycles 25% but there is no reason why this cannot be at least 40%”, says Enda. Key to maintaining the efficiency of the recycling centres is operational management. Because there is a need to handle a wide variety of materials, loose, palletized and in bins as well as other duties at the Bandon centre, Cork County Council equipment has to be versatile. Enda Kiernan is more than satisfied with the adaptability and performance of the New Holland LS150 skid steer loader, which they use.
So suitable is the LS150 for multi-tasking in recycling collection points, that Indaver also use them at their facilities at Newcastlewest and Kilmallock, C. Limerick. The New Holland LS150 skid steer has a lift height of 2.9 m, a maximum lift capacity of 640 kg and a turning radius of just 1790 mm. Although only 1490 mm wide and 3000 mm long, the 2045 kg weight machine has a maximum travel speed of almost 12 km/h and the 27 kW engine delivers 99 Nm of torque. The LS150 is also very fuel-efficient. New Holland compact line dealer, Adare Machinery Limited, supplies and services the machines for Cork and Limerick David Cuddy, Managing Director says
